Freight trains used to have cabooses, enabling railroad workers to spot problems, such as hot bearings, BEFORE they became catastrophic failures. Now they have rear-end devices, the smartest of which can alert the engineer AFTER the failure occurs. The costs of derailments and the cost savings of not having cabooses and more workers are factored into the $$$ equation. Lives don't count.
