I’d like to share a poem I wrote about my cat. Me and my wife have had him for a year and a bit and he’s completely enchanted us with his feline sorcery.
When we come home, you don’t
bound down the hall, you’re just
there, head tilted
upwards, your big round eyes
meeting ours with knowing familiarity
before you blink and slink
away, as if playing it cool…
But then you stop, in the living room just
beyond, stand up, place your forepaws
on the sofa, arch your back and scratch,
scratch, scratch, feeling your claws
in the woven threads come stuck and
unstuck.
And in every little scratch, slow blink
arched back and yawn, you let us know
that you feel safe, happy
we’re home.
You don’t say it loudly
and yet, just the sound of your clawing,
all those little gestures
say so much more—with the
swish of your tail you
strike like lightning,
causing quiet tremors
right in our core.
