Who actually revolutionized pressing in modern football?

One of the most important figures was Arrigo Sacchi.

The fascinating part: Sacchi never played professional football. Before becoming a coach, he worked in his father’s shoe factory. Yet in the late 1980s, his AC Milan team changed the way teams defend and press.

At a time when most teams defended man-to-man, Sacchi introduced coordinated, space-oriented defending and collective pressing.

One of his most effective ideas was a simple pressing trigger.

Whenever the opponent passed the ball from the centre-backs to the fullback, Milan immediately pressed.

Why the fullback?

Because on the wing, the opponent’s options are naturally limited. In the centre, a player can pass in every direction. On the flank, the touchline acts like an extra defender.

Sacchi’s players would quickly shift toward the ball, create numerical superiority, block passing lanes back inside and aggressively attack the ball carrier.

Under pressure and with fewer options, mistakes became far more likely.

The result: ball recoveries high up the pitch and short distances to goal.
