It was recently discovered that Ursula Von Der Leyen halted a multi-billion Euro fine to Google in an attempt to smooth out tensions with the Trump administration (link in comments).
I think it’s time to seriously ask ourselves who all these digital laws in Europe are benefitting. Almost no one seem to like them or understand why they exist. Except for consultants, career politicians, and presumably those who drafted them.
EU’s digital laws (GDPR, the AI Act, DSA, DMA, etc.) have not changed Big Tech’s complete dominance over Europe’s digital sector, but they have inarguably made life harder for homegrown startups and entrepreneurs.
Are “digital rights” benefitting Europeans? On paper, yes. In reality, no. At the end of the day, Big Tech do as they please, while smaller companies or those minds who have a really good idea, suffer.
In other words, the EU has successfully created a parasite economy for compliance work, which aren’t contributing with anything real or beneficial to society.
Prove me wrong.
