The novelist Garth Greenwell recently published a beautiful essay in Harper’s about James Baldwin’s 1956 novel Giovanni’s Room. He took his time to use his own shifting appreciations for the novel to advocate for a more subtle idea than we’re used to of what it means for literature to be “affirming.”
