Make money doing the work you believe in
So I had a weird interaction happen on Substack last night that I want to share with all of you. I noticed that a publication titled “Agy - The Buffalo Herbalist” posted something about cannabis. So I went and read the post (as this is a topic I have done a lot of research on and writing on myself) and I found the post to be above average in quality.
I went to compliment her in the comments section but before commenting on her article I noticed the comment (screenshot shown below) by a “Rhythm of the stars” screen name and replied to them to say that while I do not disagree with most of their comment I am curious if it was written with generative A.I..
It just has that chatbot generated vibe in sentence structure and the way it was complimenting so I was curious and asked politely.
What happens next? Agy The Buffalo Herbalist deletes my question comment and then blocks me out of the blue. I found that to be a bit strange considering the benign and earnest format of my comment.
This reminded me of a previous interaction I had with this “Agy” where she posted a strange note pleading with people to not leave typos in their writing as a way to prove their writing is not A.I. Generated (screenshot also shown below).
I asked her if she had ever been accused of using AI for writing and she told me yes but she thought of it as a compliment. When I told her I would not feel the same in such a situation myself (as I find AI writing to be really bland, lacking substance, soul and full of “digitally hallucinated” inaccuracies) she said that she admires ChatGPT generated science articles as she feels they should be “unbiased”.
In the interaction, she also made a somewhat bewildering and creepy comment (now deleted by her) in response to me under that note shown below about how she admires when people emulate chatbot writing for scientific articles because she thinks that content should be “soulless”.
It made me think of this quote shown below in the last pic.
This made me wonder if if she had been trying to make it taboo for people to criticize AI dependent writers in a backwards kind of way and also attempting to normalize AI dependance.
Perhaps she is an in the closet chatbot dependant “herbalist” and does not want other people to know?
But if she thinks that “A.I.” chatbots are so excellent and accurate because they are “soulless” (her word not mine) why not tell everyone she uses that tech to write?
Well, anyways, I cannot speak to if she uses ChatGPT and the like to write her articles or not definitively, but her behavior speaks volumes to me, and since she decided to so rudely delete my earnest and well meaning comments and block me, I will go ahead and give you an uncensored opinion of her publication as a whole.
The Buffalo Herbalist (“Agy”) writes posts that tip toe around talking about FDA approved knowledge while avoiding deep diving into territory that threatens big pharma’s profits. An example will be highlighted below, in what was intended to be a complimentary comment and earnest question on her cannabis post:
——-
“Thanks for this Agy. I especially appreciate you discussing the lesser known acid form (non intoxicating cannabinoids), terpenes and polyphenols.
Have you done any research into the promising studies showing how specific cannabinoids in raw plant material can be very effective at initiating apoptosis in a range of different types of cancer cells?”

Well since her article was limited in scope, I’ll list names of some of the posts I have published on the topic of cannabis for anyone looking to dive into the DIY medicine, growing and culinary side of working with this plant. (check my archive for the names for full articles)

In my last note touching on this anomalous interaction, I had joked about testing my theory out with a comment on her page. I had suggested, hey, if you do not care if you get blocked by her, go to one of her posts and ask her if she uses AI for her writing and see if she whips out the old digital duct tape and slaps it on your face before you can say “in the closet chatbot herbalist!”. Though I was joking, I do think it would be an interesting experiment, so let me know if any of you give it a try.

Perhaps I am way off base with this Agy and this is a big misunderstanding. If you believe that to be the case, please comment below.
