Preference is real. So is the cultural programming that shapes it.

Both things are true, and treating one as evidence against the other is a way to avoid thinking about it. The gay men who've done that thinking usually come out the other side with a more complicated, more honest relationship to their own desire.

You don't have to date everyone. But you do have to own the story you're telling about your own preferences.
