Contemporary masters of the magic of simplicity that you can learn from
Jennifer Orkin Lewis and Gayle Kabaker — two beloved Substackers — have a particular genius for what I call the Gayle-iffer or the Jen-Ayle method. In short, they teach you how to break down the chaos of reality into simple shapes and then draw patterns on top of those shapes that express whatever is in the scene you are drawing, whether it’s water, fabric, trees, buildings, people or anything else. Jennifer and Gayle not only post a lot of amazing work but they teach workshops. I’ve taken one and I learned so much.
Christoph Neimann Ok, this dude is scary. I wish I could tell you how his mind works because it’s not really like he has a particular style but he has an amazing ability to render chaotic scenes almost as if they are visual tone poems.
