I have written before that Katharine Graham was not only my mentor but my hero. Writing about her now feels less like nostalgia and more like necessity.

She understood something elemental: that a newspaper’s character ultimately reflects the character of its owner. That truth has not aged.

History doesn’t repeat, exactly — but it does ask the same questions in new forms. What is courage? What is loyalty? What is a press for?
