It was the day I nearly died…

Still pretty fresh in my memory.

I went to sleep at the wheel after finishing my exams at the end of my 4th year at Veterinary School.

I slid off a wet road, hit a ditch and kept rolling and rolling.

Time does slow down as death approaches.

In case you were wondering 😀

In this case the rolling seemed to last for all eternity. I would see the bush. I would see the sky. I would see the bush…

I held onto the steering wheel and tried to keep my head back from the windscreen.

I waited for a tree or something solid to come through the car and spear me.

Then the rolling stopped.

Silence (almost), the creaky hiss of hot crumpled metal…

And then, so ironically Joe Cocker resumed his song on the car’s cassette player… Belting out.

“You can leave your hat on.”😂

It was the closest to death I’ve ever been in my life.

Miraculous almost.

My car had spun around a massive tree barely missing it and it came to a stop right on the edge of a 300 foot ravine.

Another couple of inches…

The proximity of death can have a profound effect.

I was not asleep anymore.

Whenever I doubt my purpose or question the meaning of my life… I think back to those few seconds in 1997… and I remember…

I am meant to be here.
