Which authors have affected your work the most?

I’m primary a sci-fi writer, but I also dabble in other genres also. Also, I tend to think in the works themselves instead of the authors. So I’ll list these works, and the authors behind them.

Sci-Fi:

  • Space/Ransom Trilogy - C.S. Lewis

  • Voyage to Alpha Centauri - Michael D. O’Brien

  • John Carter/Barsoom series (first 3 books) - Edgar Rice Burroughs

  • A Canticle for Leibowitz - Walter M. Miller, Jr.

  • Dune - Frank Herbert

Everything else:

  • Paradiso (The Divine Comedy) - Dante Alighieri

  • Anabasis - Xenophon

  • The Commentaries - Julius Caesar

  • Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ - Lew Wallace

Like Josh, I don’t feel like tagging anyone. If anyone wants to play along, feel free to restack.

Which authors have affected your work the most?

Seeing as how I write across multiple genres, I have a wide range of influences to choose from. That being said, I’m only really going with authors who have had a direct, traceable influence on my work.

Fantasy:

  • David Gemmell (first and foremost)
