Notes

Apparently, it’s Macabre Monday (Thanks

). Here’s my own bit of it:

Some might know that I’ve just picked up a collection of works by Edgar Allan Poe. Not including the famous poem, The Raven, I’ve read four of his works, all short stories: The Black Cat, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Premature Burial.

The Black Cat was my first Poe short story. And that was a crazy one… wow. I understand why the compilers started out with this one. I’d like to say more on it but I think people should just read that one for themselves. I dare you.

Of course, the problem with starting out with The Black Cat is that it’s really hard to top that one. I find The Fall of the House of Usher, which hits a lot of the same notes as The Black Cat, to be okay.

Moving on is The Pit and the Pendulum. It’s a story about someone who’s trying to escape a torturous maze. It’s a little screwy and I think it’s one of those thing you have to read again to fully understand.

The Premature Burial is my second favorite story so far. As the name suggests, it’s about the story about being buried alive, or rather the fear of being buried alive. The progression of the protagonist’s paranoia is well done and the resolution is interesting.

I’m considering talking about my Poe progress every Monday, but no promises.
