Thus, Schopenhauer has plenty of company in his critiques of the mechanical (Darwinian) and Creationist arguments pertaining to life. Yet this cannot take away from the fact that in this one statement, “In itself that life force is the will”, Schopenhauer reminds us of his essential role in the generation of both biological vitalism and Lebensphilosophie more generally. How interesting given his ascetic (and often suicidal) inclinations!
