You’re not alone. I just posted this on Facebook in response to Trump dehumanizing non-white immigrants and calling them “garbage” :

Dehumanizing anyone should NEVER be normalized. Especially, especially from the mouth of the president of the United States. Or anyone else for that matter.

Most of us came here from somewhere else at some point in our family history. Some of us involuntarily, ripped from our families and homelands. Some of us fleeing persecution and dangerous situations. Some of us came for a better life and the promise of a chance at the American Dream. Some of us came for an education or to join our families. Some of us escaped from famine and disease and despotic regimes. And yes, some have come for nefarious reasons. Some. Few. But not all.

None of us are “garbage.”

What’s your family history? I could share mine. We fall in several of those categories above. And a lot of “Americans” that were already here at the time didn’t want my Italian (Sicilian) or East European (Austro-Hungarian, Ruthenian) ancestors here either. Some would say “garbage.”

So don’t ever let dehumanizing an entire race, ethnic group, religion or nationality become normalized. Ever.
