Make money doing the work you believe in

AMK - Good point. There's nothing "smaller" about the city itself. However, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED), the metro area as a whole falls out of the top 20 metro areas by population.

The San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan area has a population of approximately 2.81 million people as of early 2026 estimates. It is currently ranked as the 24th largest metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the United States and the third largest in Texas, following Dallas-Fort Worth and Greater Houston.

But, San Antonio is fast-growing (as is so much of Texas) and there's a whole lot of land around it.

“The takeaway: builders and investors should look to smaller, more affordable markets for growth in 2026. Think San Antonio. . . .”

San Antonio is the sixth-largest city in the nation, with about 1.6 million people, so while it might be more affordable, it certainly is not one of the smaller markets.
