Today is an important milestone. Commissioned by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), RAND has published its assessment of existential and global catastrophic risk. This assessment will now form the basis for DHS’s own report, which it is required to provide to Congress.

The findings in the RAND report paint a clear picture: the risk of a global catastrophe is real and only growing this decade, and there is considerably more that the US government needs to do to better understand and manage this global catastrophic risk.
