One person holding a door open for you has nothing to do with the Midwest. People do that out here in Yucca Valkey, California most of the time when I go out, especially at the library when I’m carrying bags of books.
I hated growing up in the Midwest. People were tremendously cruel and violent to me there. And Midwest people just want to be in denial about how vicious their culture really is. Both the Midwest and the South are places where people can’t talk openly and are just trapped in euphemisms, fundamentalism, and sexual shame.
People can hate on the Midwest all they want, but I love living in a place where some guy you’ve never met before will hold open the door for you at a FedEx while you make four separate trips to your car to carry in more boxes.
That kind of random kindness is just plain life-giving.
