Commercial publishing has always been about commerce not art.
Know what happens when we as publishers put out art? We are even less likely to make money than when we put out commercial work. Look at it from our perspective too. It takes a lot of time and money to publish a book. We as publishers are not unreasonable to be concerned about surviving.
What has become abundantly clear to me as I query agents is that that weβre not making art anymore. Weβre making content for markets in order to survive. Thatβs why itβs getting harder and harder to find media we like on a consistent basis.
This is hell.
