The comments a piece receives reveal nothing meaningful. I say this as someone writing online for 30 years now. Comment sections are just a feature to juice traffic numbers. They tell you nothing more meaningful than the bathroom graffiti in any high school around the country.
The first thing I do after reading a piece on Substack is to look for contrarian takes in the comments. Negative feedback is way more valuable for learning, yet you will find one such feedback among 20 positive ones. What this shows is not really how great a piece is but how much it triggered confirmation bias in the readers.
