The app for independent voices

Reading a book for 20 minutes and talking about a movie are not at all the same thing.

The crisis is because young people today can’t read deeply, they can’t concentrate deeply, and thus they can’t think deeply.

And this lack of deeper thought and a return to an oral culture rather than a literary culture contribute to the growing extremism among the young.

People who cannot think very deeply can more exactly be taken in by Far Right, Far Left, Islamist, or Christian theocratic ideologies.

A kid who won’t read for 20 minutes

will spend two hours talking about a movie they love.

The problem isn’t attention.

It’s engagement.

Stories still work.

We just have to give them the right ones.
