I saw Beyonce’s Buffalo Soldier shirt while I was putting the final touches on my outfit to go see her in Houston. During the Indian Wars of the late 19th Century in which Buffalo Soldiers served, the US army hunted down bands of Indigenous peoples in campaigns that ended in slaughter and imprisonment that many today consider genocide. Yes, this history is complicated. Bc of the limited options available to Black ppl at the time, the ways the US gov has pitted our communities against each other and the ways Indigenous communities have harmed Black communities too. But wearing a shirt that calls Indigenous people “enemies of the peace” and “warring Indians” is straight up racist. I’m disappointed she hasn’t responded, but I was really encouraged to see so many fans call her out. Often, as a Native woman it feels like other ppl don’t care when things only impact our community. This time I didn’t feel alone.
