Media Malpractice?

I saw this article on The New Republic. This is an exhaustive article featuring a litany of items where he says the politcal media failed America. Great article. My take on this is I read about every single one of these issues. They were reported repeatedly. But I claim the viewpoint of Kovach and Rosenstiel in The Elements of Journalism, where they say, "journalism is by nature reactive and practical rather than philosophical and introspective.” I take that to mean that it is NOT our job to DEFINE what is going on. That’s for the teachers, preachers, and politicians. Our job, as journalists, is to REFLECT what is going on, to hold a mirror up to our society, What the electorate chooses to do with the information is up to them. They can vote, protest, write their congressman, etc. Am I wrong?
