Today, February 22 marks the anniversary of the execution of Christoph Probst, Hans Scholl, and Sophie Scholl. They were members of The White Rose, a Nazi resistance group that surreptitiously engaged in a campaign of leafleting and graffiti until arrested by the Gestapo. Sophie was 21 years old when she was guillotined.
They knew full well the risk they took in denouncing Hitler, his tyranny, his narcissism, his reckless use of the lives of German soldiers. and his inhumanity toward Jews and the populations of conquered lands.
And yet they and their compatriots continued to act.
Anything we do today pales in comparison to what they did. Let us remember their courage as our country slides into the abyss of fascism. We know how this story ends if we do not show the courage of The White Rose.
