⚡️🖥️ 🚨 Power grid watchdog issues its highest-level alert: Data centers running AI threaten to trigger massive blackouts across North America.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has issued a rare Level 3 "essential action" alert—its most severe warning—targeting the surge of data centers connecting to the power grid.

As the primary oversight agency for the U.S., Canada, and parts of Mexico, NERC warned that grid operators currently lack the necessary procedures to manage the massive "computational loads" required for modern technology. Unlike traditional energy consumers, these facilities, particularly those used for AI training and cryptocurrency mining, create rapid and unpredictable fluctuations in power usage that can destabilize the entire bulk power system within seconds.

This instability stems from "wild power swings" that occur too quickly for manual intervention, leaving almost no room for real-time adjustments by grid operators. NERC’s report emphasizes that existing infrastructure was not designed to handle the sheer volume and volatility of these modern energy demands. Consequently, the agency has mandated that all grid operators and power plant owners submit comprehensive risk mitigation plans by August 3. This move signals a critical shift in energy policy as regulators race to ensure that the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure does not result in widespread outages or long-term damage to the continent’s electrical reliability.
