My great grandfather came over from Sicily, illegally, in the 1920s, and settled in Newark, NJ where he sold fruit on the streets for a living.
As the story goes, he stowed himself aboard a cargo ship to get here. Palermo was almost completely controlled by the mafia at this time, and he basically had to choose between starvation and living in Newark.
What I mean is that, he was here ILLEGALLY. And it’s a shame ICE didn’t exist back then. He ought to have secured the funds to arrive within the bounds of the law, or personally confront the most powerful La Cosa Nostra families in Sicily at the time.
Let’s make it a great Monday.
