John Calvin understood the fifth beatitude (“Flourishing are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy”) as a call to suffer in the shoes of our neighbor:

We must assume their identity, as it were, so as to be deeply touched by their suffering and moved by love to mourn with them."

This kind of mercy “is the grief we experience from the sadness of others.”
