Tom Gayner on the importance of consistency and ‘staying in the game’
“If you can continue to satisfy and be reasonable, there’s all kinds of people that are going to fall away along the path, and it’s amazing how high up in the percentile rankings you’ll become.
I was never the number one at anything. I’ve always just been steady and competent and able. But as my father said, the best ability is dependability. So to do it over and over and over and over again, it keeps you in the game. And it’s amazing how you do sort of become number-oneish over time, just because the competitive field thins out so much.”
