Love is, according to Svensk Uppslagsbok, 1950 (Swedish Encyclopedia): “The erotic love is sometimes rather a selfish desire to possess; so with Bluebeard as well as Don Juan. But the liking of a certain person often means that one values and has a heart for this person, and only insofar as this is the case, there is love in the true sense. But the erotic taste is accompanied by feelings of various kinds: a sense of beauty, admiration, affection and esteem, the desire to be valued above others, heightened self-esteem, the joy of witnessing, an increase in compassion, sympathy, as the joy is shared with another (after a detailed analysis by Herbert Spencer).” (p 428)
