“It confirms that writing is a difficult way to make a living, and that most full-time freelance “pure” writers have family wealth or a high-income partner to support them. Those who fully support themselves usually have diverse income streams: public speaking, adjunct teaching, private coaching and group workshops, manuscript editing, corporate editorial consulting/copywriting, grants and fellowships, etc. Only a few, very established people support themselves solely through feature reporting and/or book writing.”
