They thought that, by supporting him, they could become like him, invited to the party, rich, famous, powerful, and get to grab all the hot babes. In return, he gave them permission to indulge in the worst aspects of human behavior without (much) consequence. We can’t goad them, but if they come to us, better to welcome them, than beat them over the head with their gullibility.
