What is ISO 42001?

The basics about the global standard for AI governance:

Technically called ISO/IEC 42001:2023, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) finalized and published it at the end of 2023.

These global organizations develop standards for a variety of practices, from manufacturing quality management to information security to AI governance.

It give you a blueprint for building your Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS).

Your AIMS, according to ISO 42001, is a:

-> Set of interrelated or interacting elements

-> Establishing objectives related to AI, along with

-> Policies and processes to achieve those objectives

The document has six parts:

-> Clauses 1-3: intro/definitions

-> Clause 4-10: The core of what to do

-> Annex A: Controls you need to at least consider

-> Annex B: Implementation guidance for these controls

-> Annex C: Sample AI objectives for the AIMS to pursue

-> Annex D: Integration with other management systems
