I am sure you and others here are already aware that when you write by hand you are using a different part of your brain than typing, especially with a laptop. Therefore, you are more likely to remember, and therefore develop, the ideas you captured because of the physical (& brain) engagement with the words on the page. It is especially useful for note taking. I learned this when working in a school and reading round ‘Visible Thinking’ techniques as described in Harvard’s Project Zero pz.harvard.edu/thinking… Whereas children with dyslexia often find typing helpful…
Personally, I find I develop my thinking through physically writing as much as plain old contemplation. I love notebooks, pens, pencils and even the smell of ink …
Seperately, I regret not keeping up the shorthand I learned earlier. The intrigue and speed of those ‘secret’ outlines, a whole other way of recording words and ideas. Very satisfying… but that is a different story.
