Confession: I struggle with the Catholic position on the death penalty. As in, I’m relieved Tanner Horner was sentenced to death for what he did to Athena Strand. He is still subject to God’s mercy, as we all are, but people who rape and murder children don’t get to stay here. Leniency on this problem, such as we see in the UK, seems a total affront to justice and reason. Therapy is not sufficiently effective to sway me (5% reduction in recidivism for CBT). I don’t know how to square my inclinations with Church teaching, especially given that the Vatican used to have an executioner on staff. In recent history. Discuss
