The self-regulating body of Belgian media has recently rebuked a news outlet for transcribing JD Vance's 2025 Munich speech in its entirety, without edit or comment. According to the Council for Journalistic Ethics, the transcript constituted "a clear breach of the media cordon sanitaire". The ruling faults 21News for failing to take the time "to cross-check the speaker's statements, to put them in perspective, or to rectify them”. In other words, Belgian journalists have a professional duty to shield their audiences from the full impact of what the US vice-president said — by correcting it first.
