If you are trying to explain something to somene, it is often very useful to first articulate their current mental model (by guessing in writing, or asking in conversation). You have to activate the current mental model before you remodel it. Otherwise, they go “oh, I’m not that stupid lol!” or “yes, obviously, I always think like that!) and the mental model they really act by hides in their head until after your explanation. Then the mental model comes out again and they keep thinking in the old way. It is very easy to update our understanding in one part of the brain and not have that connect to the relevant part of the brain, so an explanation needs to hone in on the relevant part of the brain were the remodelling is needed. And you do this by articulating the wrong idea in a way that doesn’t make the reader defensive. This is often best done by explaining the wrong idea with enough compassion and understanding that they think you believe it is true, before pointing out flaws in it, and better ways of thinking about it.
