I’m not a paid subscriber but I imagine there are useful comments here about the bothersome tax problem for UK Substack writers.
My understanding is that you only pay UK VAT after a certain threshold, but in some EU and other countries you pay tax on even one subscriber. And the problem is that unlike other platforms which collect this on the sale, Substack leaves you to sort it out for yourself.
My accountant has no answers for me and the Stripe guidance is, frankly, confusing. (There was a dead to the advice I needed about Denmark…) But essentially, I think we have to register in multiple countries and pay tax liabilities through Stripe as they become due when we gain subscribers.
So much for Substack making things simple for writers on the business side!
