Kebebasan is one of the most frequently invoked words in Indonesian political life, and one of the least settled. Since Reformasi, kebebasan has been celebrated, feared, restricted, and redefined, often in the name of order and stability. The recent conviction of Laras Faizati for her social media posts brings these tensions into sharp focus. At stake is not only a legal judgment, but the meaning of freedom itself: who is allowed to speak, in what tone, and at what cost.
