In my current book project, almost certainly my last with a proper scholarly press, I’m unrestrainedly indulging my inner Perry Anderson, e.g., using “Sublime Porte” as synecdoche for the Ottoman Empire, just expecting the reader to know what that means and if he doesn’t then tough luck.
