Annie Turnbo Malone was born in 1869 in Metropolis, Illinois, the daughter of formerly enslaved parents. Quiet and curious as a child, she developed a fascination with hair care, experimenting with new formulas at home.
By the early 1900s, Annie had created innovative hair products designed specifically for black women, offering an alternative to the harsh and damaging treatments than on the market. She built a business around her creations, training a network of agents, mostly women, to sell them door to door.
Her company, Poro, grew into a nationally recognized brand, employing thousands and establishing a cosmetology school that trained women in both beauty and business. And Annie became one of the first black women millionaires in the United States.
Annie devoted much of her fortune to philanthropy, donating to schools, churches, and community organizations. She passed away in 1957.
