It is telling that many of these accounts, as you noted, came months or years later. I'm currently reading "Case Closed" by Gerald Posner, and he details eyewitnesses to the Kennedy assassination who gave conspiracy-friendly testimony after similar time periods elapsed...who themselves admitted their own memories were influenced by conspiracy theories since they had first seen the event. Mass suggestibility can certainly occur over time in both cases.
