Today the NATO summit opens in Ankara, Türkiye — but did you know about the alliance's Nazi legacy? The largest peacetime military alliance in the world has a dubious history of employing some of Hitler's most senior officers.

The names Hans Speidel and Adolf Heusinger mean little to most people today. Yet both were key figures in Hitler's war machine who went on to hold some of the highest positions in NATO — Speidel commanding the alliance's land forces in Central Europe, and Heusinger chairing its Military Committee.
