JD Vance says Israeli officials should stop criticising Trump because Trump is supposedly the only world leader still sympathetic to Israel.
That claim is false.
And it matters, because it is being used to pressure Israel into silence over a deal that affects its security.
India has openly strengthened ties with Israel under Modi, building a strategic partnership while resisting much of the international pressure against Israel.
The UAE has maintained relations through the Abraham Accords, with trade, technology, tourism and security cooperation continuing despite regional tensions.
Argentina, under Javier Milei, has become one of Israel’s strongest supporters, backing Israel against terrorism and aligning closely with its security concerns.
Germany continues deep security cooperation with Israel, including missile defence and cybersecurity partnerships, rooted in its historic responsibility after the Holocaust.
So no, Israel is not friendless.
And even if it were, that would be an indictment of the international community, not an argument for Israeli silence.
Yes, America has provided vital military support. That deserves recognition.
But Israel has also carried enormous burdens itself: intelligence, operations, risk, and the defence of its own citizens.
Friendship is not ownership.
Alliance is not control.
Support does not give anyone the right to dictate what another sovereign nation may say.
Israel is an independent state.
Its elected officials answer to Israelis.
Not to JD Vance.
Not to Qatar.
Not to anyone who thinks friendship requires submission.
