STMicroelectronics $STM is moving its PIC100 platform into mass production, signaling a huge leap forward for optical interconnects powering AI data centers.
Built on 300 mm wafers and developed with AWS, the platform is scaling fast, with ST it anticipates "quadrupling our production by 2027 to meet the massive demand for silicon photonics technology that supports higher bandwidth and energy efficiency for hyperscalers’ AI workloads."
They point to figures from analyst company LightCounting Market Research, which suggest that the market for data center pluggable optics will exceed $34 billion USD by 2030, with co-packaged optics contributing more than $9 billion in revenue.
