I hope John Fetterman resigns from the Senate and gets the help he needs. No job is worth the risk that you won’t be there for your kids as they grow up.

“I was supposed to do the score of GYPSY.” - Stephen Sondheim

Precisely 55 years ago, on May 3, 1970, COMPANY’s original cast album was recorded. The marathon session was captured as a documentary film by D. A. Pennebaker. Here, Sondheim speaks candidly about his work thus far.

He’s 40 years old here. Before his 50th birthday, he would wri…

Just got a fun notification from Substack:

“You are currently #94 Rising in Culture”

Took a minute for it to sink in, but what a lovely way to start the day.

A big THANK YOU to all my boos who’ve helped make this possible. And everyone who reads and/or watches my work.

One thing that really struck me about the incredible (and very traumatic) life story of a recent “Saint of the Day” was how she was described as “filled with joy.” How many of us with emotional trauma in our pasts can say that about themselves?

The very first car I ever paid for myself was an old, beat-up Volkswagen Beetle way back in 1983 — for $400.

I bought it to commute from my parents' house in Denver to the University of Colorado in Boulder, where I was putting myself through school, so I didn’t have much to spend.

It was so beat-up that there were holes in the floor, so I …

I completely understand that many of RFK Jr’s comments about autism during Holy Week validated the experience of many families.

But I still can't get past his use of the word “destroy” and his reduction of the value of human life to what a person can produce for the state via taxes or marriage and babies. That language still scares the hell out of me.

And it's not even the truth. Raising a child with autism is hard. Studies have shown that parents of children with autism have the same stress lev…

Phonecam doesn't really do it justice but I don't think I fully appreciated how good the Lake Michigan color palette was when I lived in Chicago.

I met Bruce on a beach once. Well, not exactly, I’d been on the beach relaxing before his gig in Brighton, England on ‘The River’ tour. I went for a stroll and he was leaving The Grand Hotel IIRC. There were only about five of us holding him up and the conversion was entirely around the songs he might play later. His answers were mumbled and brief. “Yes, we might do that one.” “No, not tonight.”

Obviously the gig itself was unforgettable.

Was this the original river tour in like 78?

I’ve just looked it up. It was May 26 or 27 1981.

Incredible gig, at a time when Bruce was popular but not yet massive in the UK. I’d been buying his records since ‘Born to Run’.
