“Please don’t blame Kamala Harris for losing the election. She ran a fantastic campaign and managed to galvanize incredible support and fundraising in less than 100 days. She led a historic movement, overperformed at her debate, and tackled difficult interviews on Fox News as well as independent media and podcasts.
And I don’t blame Joe Biden for her loss, either. He pulled us out of a pandemic, added jobs back to the economy, oversaw several stock market highs and record-low unemployment, passed historic climate legislation, and united NATO against Russia.
Being a rationale guy that he is, and feeling confident in his track record of having a successful first term — as well winning his race in 2020 — Joe had every right to run for re-election.
And, when he blew it in the debate, he gracefully dropped out the next week.
All this is to say
I think it’s easy to point fingers at our own team, and perhaps some things could have been done differently.
The bottom line is — and this has been a hard pill for me to swallow — a majority of voters like Donald Trump and like what he was offering.
In fact, they like him so much that they are able to disregard his unfavorable policies, or, are so easily manipulated by disinformation, that they were tricked into believing his plan would actually be beneficial to them.
Either way
The man received roughly the same number of votes that he did in 2020, which means he didn’t lose a single net-voter.
The fact that he won the popular vote means most Americans don’t care, don’t mind, or are totally okay with his felony charges, his rape case, his vulgar behavior, his racist rhetoric, his billionaire tax cuts, and his ruthless authoritarian agenda to diminish the rights of women, migrants, and minorities, and abolish federal agencies, dismantle labor unions, and remove affordable healthcare.
And let’s be real: Biden and Harris explained over and over that the price of milk was high due to price-gouging and the effects of pandemic recovery — but those explanations evidently fell on the deaf ears of people who already had their minds made up.
The takeaway
I am not sure I will ever come to terms with living in a country where a man of his character and agenda is awarded with the highest office.
Even Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene were re-elected, proving that intellect and morality are no longer traits required to win elections.
Anyhow
Not sure about you guys, but I can’t stop thinking about what went wrong, why it went wrong, and how I got so blindsided by his sweeping victory — and apparently, so did the expert pundits, pollsters, and election predictors (whose polls and predictions I will never be sharing in my column ever again).
Plus
I am disappointed in my “own kind” for being the largest voting bloc who showed up for Trump.
I will work on finding ways to appeal to them in the coming months to bring as many as I can back to a place of sanity, compassion, decency, ethics, and common sense.
Most importantly
I once again want to express my gratitude for the fight, effort, and heart you all gave to stand up for what was right.
At the very least, I hope I was able to provide you with some laughs and smiles on the road to hell.
The shock will soon pass. I know brighter days — and columns — are ahead as we figure out the next angle of resistance together.
Stay strong, keep hopeful, and take a well-earned break this weekend!”
