Should you target journals or industry publications for authorship? (as an industry professional)

Generally speaking, target industry publications as:

  • Their editorial standards tend to make more sense for professionals without research experience (with high quality academic journals, many have strict requirements that you may only know of as an experienced researcher).

  • They tend to have strong media kits (which can describe in detail who reads the publication, their job titles, the companies at which they work, etc.). All of these details can be used as proof that the publication is consumed by top industry professionals (and, as a result, can help show that your expertise is consumed by top professionals in your field if you end up publishing articles in them).

  • They also tend to be read by industry professionals who may then notice your work and then refer you to different kinds of profile-building opportunities.
