There's this idea in Isaac Asimov's Foundation that, in the future, all knowledge will already have been discovered, and so it must simply be mined from a compendium of published knowledge.

… I think about that sometimes and wonder if we're already there, particularly while reading the classics. I’ll spend hours reflecting on a new piece of wisdom that I feel must be novel, only to find it was already deeply examined by Nietzsche.
