Abracadabra is a word from a magic book. But all books are magic books because magic is in everything we do. We all believe in things we cannot see – love and hate, hope and despair, duty and betrayal; ideas like India, God and money. Without this intangible web of meaning, life starts to look rather absurd – and perhaps it is, as Saleem’s “long-winded autobiography” appears to demonstrate.
