The military-administrative slave elite that staffed different levels of Ottoman government and military were supplied by a system called devşirme (child levy). How this worked was that there was a periodic recruitment of Christian boys, mostly from the Balkans, who were taken from their families, converted to Islam, trained in the palace school, and assigned to military or administrative careers in the sultan’s service.
