A Reflection on ‘Sakinah’ (True Peace)
There is a verse in the Quran in Surah Al-Fath that speaks of sakinah - peace that Allah sends into the hearts of the believers:
…هُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“He it is Who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers ...” (Surah Al-Fath 48:4)
The Arabic word used in the verse is anzala - He sent down. That means peace is not something we create by our own strength, it is something that descends from above. Just as rain falls only when the sky opens, sakina is sent down by Allah when He wills and guides the heart to receive it.
We live in an age where everyone is searching for calm. Shelves are full of self-help books, podcasts, and techniques promising inner balance. But the peace they offer often fades because it begins with the self, not with the Source. We learn from this verse that real peace is Divine, not psychological. It comes when we align ourselves with Allah, trusting His decree, remembering His name, and letting go of control. Only then we can expect the sakinah to be sent down.
